Emlid Reach RS+, affordable GNSS receiver

If you are looking for an affordable GNSS receiver than the Emlid Reach RS+ is a great GNSS receiver for you. It is light and it does everything that a GNSS receiver should do.

And that is to give the position where the receiver is at that moment. That is also what the Emlid Reach RS+ does. So if you want to test with GPS signals and positioning this GNSS receiver is a great tool.

Positioning

So yes the Emlid Reach RS+ gives you the exact position of where it is. This it does with 72 channels. And it uses the satellite constellations GPS, GLONASS, BEIDOU and GALILEO.

It does not use all satellites of those constellations. It only uses the following satellite types:

  • GPS L1
  • GLONASS G1
  • BEIDOU B1
  • GALILEO E1

So that are not that many satellite types. But it does get an accurate position. Sometimes it can take a bit longer, but if you want to check out how a GNSS receiver works for you than it is a perfect solution.

Connections

This GNSS receiver can be connected in different ways. The most important one is of course Bluetooth. With the Bluetooth connection you can use this GNSS receiver with Apglos Survey Wizard. If you want to know more about this easy to use land survey app then chec out this page.

But besides Bluetooth there are more ways to connect. The settings of this GNSS receiver can be configured through a Wi-Fi connection. Emlid made a special app for this. It is called ReachView. It is free to download from the Google Play Store.

But what is even more remarkable is that the Emlid Reach RS+ even has a long range radio. And that for this price. That means you really get worth for your money with this GNSS receiver.

Emlid Reach RS+ and NTRIP

The Emlid Reach RS+ has different ways to work with NTRIP. Of course the easiest way is with Apglos Survey Wizard. When you connect Apglos Survey Wizard with the GNSS receiver you can fill in all the NTRIP data, like IP address, port, username, password and mountpoint. It works quick and easy.

But with ReachView you can also set up the NTRIP data.

Ntrip in ReachView

When you do that you need to have a sim card in the receiver, because the Emlid Reach RS+ needs to send and receive data.

Besides NTRIP this GNSS receiver also works in a rover base solution. So your rover will get the correction data from a base.

Benefits of Emlid Reach RS+

So let’s see about the benefits of this receiver. The main benefit is that it is afforable. It might even be the best priced GNSS receiver in the world. So it will be hard to find any other GNSS receiver for a lower price. And that is a good thing.

Because you want the GNSS receiver to work. And even if you could find a GNSS receiver for a lower price than you know that this one is very complete.

And that is the other big benefit of this receiver.

Manual of Emlid Reach RS+

Actually there is no real manual. The manufacturer of this GNSS receiver is Emlid. And Emlid decided not to produce a manual. That is ok, but can complicate things a bit. Luckily they decided to make a forum and documents on their website to help the user out.

But of course when you buy this GNSS receiver or any other product from our webshop we are happy to support you with your questions. So if you have any questions about this GNSS receiver contact us. We love to help you out.

Specifications of Emlid Reach RS+ including accuracy

People have a lot of question about the accuracy of the Emlid Reach RS+. They wonder how a GNSS receiver of this price can be accurate enough for the projects they want to do with the GNSS receiver. And maybe you have the same question. So let’s check the specifications of this GNSS receiver:

    Mechanical

    • Dimensions: 145x145x85 mm
    • Weight: 690 g
    • Operating temperature: -20 ºC to +65 ºC
    • Ingress protection: IP67

    Electrical

    • Autonomy: Up to 30 hrs
    • Battery: LiFePO4 3.2 V
    • External power input: 6–40 V
    • Charging MicroUSB: 5 V
    • Certification: FCC, CE

    Positioning

    • Static horizontal: 5 mm + 1 ppm
    • Static vertical: 10 mm + 2 ppm
    • Kinematic horizontal: 7 mm + 1 ppm
    • Kinematic vertical: 14 mm + 2 ppm

    Connectivity

    • LoRa radio: yes
    • Frequency range: 868/915 MHz
    • Distance: Up to 8 km
    • Wi-Fi: 802.11b/g/n
    • Bluetooth: 4.0/2.1 EDR
    • Ports: RS-232, MicroUSB

    Data

    • Corrections: NTRIP, RTCM3
    • Position output: NMEA, LLH/XYZ
    • Data logging RINEX with events
with update rate up to 14 Hz
    • Internal storage: 8 GB

    GNSS

    • Signal tracked: GPS/QZSS L1, GLONASS G1, BeiDou B1, Galileo E1, SBAS
    • Number of channels: 72
    • Update rates: 14 Hz / 5 Hz
    • IMU: 9DOF

    Accuracy

So as you can see from the these specifications, that the manufacturer Emlid provides itself on their website, the accuracy is kind of well. At least when the circumstances are well. As you can see at positioning the kinematic accuracy is horizontally 7 mm and vertically 14 mm. But the further you get from the correction location if it is a base or NTRIP station then the accuracy will drop quicker than with other receivers. So that is only to take into account when you want to use this GNSS receiver.

Emlid Reach RS+ vs Emlid Reach RS2

We did test the Emlid Reach RS+. And we compared it with the Emlid Reach RS2. If you are doubting which one to buy than you should check this video.

In the video we start both GNSS receivers. It is a battle of Reach RS+ vs Reach RS2. And of course the Emlid Reach RS2 wins, but that is also because it is more than twice as expensive.

So the comparison Reach RS+ vs Reach RS2 is kind of unfair. It all depends for what purpose you will use the GNSS receiver. And if you will use the GNSS receiver for some purposes that don’t have any time pressure than the Emlid Reach RS+ is a great GNSS receiver and it can work for you.

If not than you might check out the page of the Emlid Reach RS2.
